Security were forced to retreat as reckless fans stormed the barricades in a moment that ‘could have killed someone’.

Victoria Police released a statement on Thursday morning, condemning the behaviour.

“Officers were constantly trying to ensure the safety of the crowd, managing and monitoring public order at the Federation Square site however at times multiple temporary fences, which were in place to assist with managing the crowd, were breached. “Four males, ranging in age from 16 to 23, were issued with penalty notices for possessing flares and a 16-year-old male was cautioned in relation to throwing a flare.

Guardian reporter Matilda Boseley shared video of the gates being broken down as fans piled on top of them in a dangerous rush to get through.
