Concerns grow over a glut of scams and impersonation if users are allowed to buy ‘verified’ ticks which are meant to show that brands and public figures are genuine
After buying Twitter in a deal worth $44 billion, Musk has vowed to give ticks to anyone willing to pay for them Twitter is expected to roll out Elon Musk’s plan to allow users to “buy” aThe feature isincluding the UK, the US, Cananda, Australia and New Zealand, according to a Twitter statement. Until now, “verified” ticks on the platform have been used to denote the genuine accounts of brands and public figures such as journalists and celebrities.
But after buying the platform in a deal worth $44 billion, Musk has vowed to give ticks to anyone willing to pay for it – demanding staff push through an expedited release in time for a planned launch on Monday. Controversially, it is thought users who pay for a tick under the revamped Twitter Blue subscription scheme will not be required to verify their identity, which those who currently have a tick are required to do – fuelling fears that it could be vulnerable to impersonation if scammers and hoaxers take advantage.
