But when they are roused from their slumbers on a quiet Sunday evening to the sound of engine pops and cars backfiring, they draw a line.
Car meets are often characterised by large numbers of motorists gathering to watch dangerous stunts, including drifting, high-speed racing, and drivers even performing "donuts". While the gatherings are usually not a crime, the anti-social driving habits can often lead to dangerous incidents. Chris and Sue have lived on the adjacent road for 30 years, and while the issue of car meets isn't new, they say it is time for effective enforcement of the dual carriageway.
Chris said: "We back onto it. All we can hear is pops. If they don't kill themselves, they will kill someone else.
"My biggest worry is that if a family are coming home at 10pm at night and these idiots hit them, they could kill them, they don't care, all it needs is a speed camera there. "I've heard they leave scouts there, you hear all this revving, then a police car comes, and then it stops. We need ANPR there - we need a deterrent, it's been going on for years.
"Sue said: "Someone said that the problem is the lay-by - what they are doing is stopping and recording the people doing dangerous speeds. "While it's a pain in the neck if you are trying to get to sleep, it's more concerning that they might kill someone. " After a recent spate of incidents, residents and councillors raised the issue with Nottinghamshire Police in order to understand what measures were being taken.
Police responded to say they had increased patrols, issued summons by post and explained that they had two recent call-outs regarding the A52 on Friday, June 5. Pat Saunders, 85, said: "It's usually Sundays and Fridays, it happens all the time and it's ever so noisy.
"It's really frightening and noisy, it's always late at night, and it happens all the time here. I haven't seen any change.
"It's so disruptive, it's been going on for years, and it has just got a lot worse; the speed they go at must be terrible. " Anthony Kent, 66, added: "It just happens in the middle of the night, it happens every two or three weeks, they are usually at the weekend.
"It seems to me that the solution is that we should have cameras, it strikes me that putting an average speed check or some other thing on that road would solve these problems, there are a lot of accidents on Bardills roundabout. Cllr Teresa Cullen has raised the problem with the police after receiving a number of complaints from locals, she said: "This issue needs to be stopped.patrols have been increased but it’s clearly not enough when local residents are still being plagued by late night noise, disturbance as well as law-abiding road users being put at risk by dangerous driving.
"Myself and Cllr Gabrielle Bunn will be calling another public meeting on this issue so the police can hear directly from residents that it affects. "But, in the meantime, it’s important residents keep reporting these incidents so we can keep it at the top of the agenda.
" Inspector Usha Madaraa, district commander for Broxtowe, said: "We share the concerns about driver behaviour on this stretch of road and have been taking a proactive approach to challenging, deterring and prosecuting drivers where necessary. "Officers from our Roads Policing Unit will be paying particularly close attention to this stretch of road over the next few weeks and will take robust action against drivers behaving in an antisocial or criminal way.
"As we saw recently in the case of a young man who was sent to prison for causing a serious collision on this stretch of road, this kind of driving can lead very quickly to life‑changing consequences for everyone involved. "That’s why we take this issue so seriously and why we encourage anyone who witnesses or records such behaviour via dashcam to get in touch and tell us about it.
"From there, we can take immediate enforcement action and/or begin the process of seizing vehicles. "after causing a three-car collision on the A52 in Bramcote. Courtney was driving in close proximity to several vehicles on January 18, 2025. Officers arrived at the scene just after 10pm to find a serious three-car collision, with one vehicle knocked off the carriageway.
A female passenger of one of the cars suffered a broken collarbone, while the male driver sustained significant bruising. A dog also required surgery as a result of the crash. The 22-year-old was spoken to at the scene and was arrested nine days later. He tried to appeal the sentence, but this was dismissed. Inspector Madara added: “As Courtney has discovered to his cost, the consequences of this kind of behaviour can be very serious indeed.
“I hope what has happened to him acts as a warning to other young men about the consequences of such recklessness, stupidity, and disregard for the safety of other road users. ”
