Russia has launched a satellite in the same orbit as a US probe, which could be vulnerable to attack

A Soyuz-2.1b rocket takes off with the Russian satellite on 16 May of launching an anti-satellite weapon into space and placing it in the same orbit as an American probe, leading to fears of possible sabotage and cyber warfare.

While little is known about the Russian satellite, Juliana Suess, of the Royal United Services Institute, said it could be used to interfere with and disrupt American satellites through “spamming and spoofing”, using cyber warfare or electromagnetic interference. Russia has not publicly commented on the issue and has not disclosed the satellite’s mission. It was launched using a Soyuz-2.1b rocket on 16 May, “in the interests of the defence ministry”, according to its Roskosmos state space agencyone reason for a Russian satellite getting “too close for comfort” could be to take pictures of the US satellite, adding: “This is very old-hat technology.
