The long Christmas season in the country officially ends on Sunday, Jan. 8, with the commemoration of the Feast of the Epiphany.

Liturgically, however, the joyous season officially ends on Monday, Jan. 9, on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

Also known as Theophany, meaning “vision of God,” the feast commemorates the manifestation of the Infant Jesus to the Three Wise Men from the East: Melchor, Gaspar, and Balthazar. Warned by an angel in a dream not to tell King Herod of the location of the Infant Jesus, they took a different path on their return to avoid Herod who wanted to get rid of the newborn child whom he thought was a threat to his throne.

Old traditions associated with the feast include leaving shoes by the doorstep so the kings can leave behind gifts like candies or money.
