A federal appeals court struck down a West Virginia law that barred transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams in public schools and colleges. In a 2-1 ruling, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sided with Becky Pepper-Jackson, 13, a transgender girl who argued that the law prevented her from running on the girls’ cross-country and track teams at her West Virginia middle school.
” West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, a Republican who argued the case on behalf of the state, said in a statement that he was “deeply disappointed” in the decision and vowed to fight to keep the law in place. “We must keep working to protect women’s sports so that women’s safety is secured and girls have a truly fair playing field,” he said. “We know the law is correct and will use every available tool to defend it.
