NASHVILLE, Tenn. —An online publication is taking the FBI to court and celebrating a victory after a federal judge ordered the FBI to turn over the shooter's writings to the court. That judge will then review them and determine if they should be released.Last May, The Tennessee Star, along with several other groups, sued the Metro Nashville government for not releasing the shooter's writings. That case is currently tied up in court.
Michael Leheay, with the Tennessee Star, says "The documents are public record, and they should be released. Metro government failed to release them; we asked them nicely. They didn't. They shared those documents with the FBI, and we asked them nicely in accordance with the law. When government entities don't comply with the law, we have recourse through the courts.
Leheay says right now he believes it's more likely the documents will be released either in full or in part first by the decision made by the federal judge. Wednesday FOX 17 News spoke with former FBI agent Scott Augenbaum, who broke down how cases like this work.
