U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested the 29-year-old man in Connecticut.
The 29-year-old individual, who officials say was in the U.S. illegally, was convicted of the offense by a Brazilian court in July 2016. Border Patrol officials in 2018 admitted the individual to the U.S., but noted he “violated the terms of his admittance.”
New Jersey State Police arrested the Brazilian national in Jan. 2023 on marijuana possession charges, but released him before ICE could take action, according to Wednesday's press release. Brazilian officials that month issued an arrest warrant for the individual. Deportation officers ultimately arrested the individual in Stamford, Connecticut Wednesday and took him into custody, where he now awaits the outcome of removal proceedings.
This Brazilian noncitizen fled to the United States in an effort to evade justice in his home country,” Enforcement Removal Operations Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons said. “His actions resulted in the death of a person, and he posed a significant threat to the residents of Connecticut. ERO Boston will not allow our New England communities to become safe havens for foreign criminals. We will aggressively arrest and remove any noncitizen threat to the safety of our neighborhoods.
