As higher numbers of us are forced to think more about what we eat, or whether we can eat at all, our weekly Around 80 per cent of Indian restaurants in the UK are owned by Bangladeshis, yet serve neither authentic Indian nor Bangladeshi cuisine . My mum cleverly made the most of what we had, sharing culinary joy with homemade treats, in lieu of pricey takeaways and restaurant meals. Bangladeshis are experts at zero waste lifestyles. Everything is used up, from fish heads and vegetable peels to offal. My dad’s growing interest in gardening meant tomatoes and coriander filled up our tiny balcony. When we moved, dad acquired an allotment which sustained us, lightening the costs of running a family kitchen.
