A non-contact sensor could help detect if a driver is drowsy or even help communication in people who can't speak.

The clear, flexible sensor that can detect how close eyelashes are to the lens, enabling blink tracking.A team of researchers at the East China University of Science and Technology has developed a flexible film using a novel material that can detect the movements of nearby objects without actually coming in contact with them. The team demonstrated its technology in glasses that can track the blinks of the human eye.

The limitations of noncontact sensors developed so far range from the amount of charge they can hold to the type of objects they can detect. Additionally, they are not easy to fabricate. Electret materials can occur naturally and be made synthetically. Polyethyleneterepthalate is common example of electret. Image credit:Together with Xunlin Qiu, Fuzhen Xuan, and other researchers at ECUST, Wang fabricated a new electret material using a three-part system where fluorinated ethylene propylene made the top sensing layer. An electrically conductive film and a flexible plastic base comprised the material’s middle and bottom layers.
