The state's 17 female flag football coaches are helping push a fast growing sport forward
Updated: May. 19, 2024, 12:05 a.m.Millville Head Coach Kayla Rabenold speaks with Danielle Olinda of Millville between plays at Delsea Regional High School in Franklinville, NJ on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.“We were a Pop Warner family and I got stuck cheering. My mom would not let me play. I wanted to wrestle, too. By not getting that opportunity, I knew coaching football was for me. While on-the-field results have been mixed, the 17 women coaches of flag football are winning big in the non-scoring categories of creating safe, nonjudgemental environments, helping build strong, confident young women and uniting girls who may never have found commonality without the game. “I haven’t played this game for 10 years like male coaches have,” said Julie Williams, 23, the head coach at Pompton Lakes. “It’s all brand new to both me and the girls. Football is a language all its own. So far, the learning curve as been pretty good.”

If the trend in the NFL is any indication, the number of women coaching at the high school level is bound to increase.Associated Press report,
