Inside Fergie's Royal life: 'I married a Prince - there were expectations'
From navigating a high-profile divorce from Prince Andrew to overcoming tabloid scandals and decades of media speculation about her personal life, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, is a survivor.
Known as one of the most down-to-earth members of the royal family, and by her own admission, deeply romantic, it’s perhaps unsurprising that she enjoys spending time across the pond. Although their marriage ended 27 years ago, Sarah and Prince Andrew, who are parents to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, have pulled off the rare feat of undergoing an amicable divorce and still live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park when they are in the UK.
“I think any trauma has to be spoken about, and that didn’t happen for me. If you store things up it literally causes ‘dis-ease’ – which is a very interesting word when you think about it.”“In terms of my parents’ baby loss, they didn’t talk about it at the time, and I only discovered it as an adult. Looking back, I suspect it was a big part of why my mum was so unhappy.
Becoming “granny”, as she’s known, has clearly come naturally to the longtime children’s author, whose books include Ballerina Rosie, Tea For Ruby and the Little Red series. “While her telling me was a private moment, I will say that there is nothing more exciting and beautiful than seeing the smile on your child’s face when they have news like that to deliver,” she says. “The whole family is thrilled that she is expecting another child.”
Another huge loss for the duchess was the sudden death in January of her “sister” Lisa Marie Presley, aged 54. The character was inspired by Sarah’s great-great-aunt Lady Mary Montagu Douglas Scott. In fact, the duchess’s ancestry has made her one of the most noble royals. “I always think of a quote from Sidney Poitier, who told Oprah Winfrey in a brilliant interview, ‘It’s difficult when you’re carrying other people’s dreams. You have to hold on to the dream that’s inside yourself and know if you’re true to that, that’s really all that matters.’ I think that’s really important, not to forget your own dreams whatever position you are in, and I feel like I’m finally realising mine in this new career as a novelist.
