Ferne McCann: 'I wanted fame - but TOWIE came with a price I wasn't ready for'
When Ferne McCann stepped in front of the TOWIE cameras for the first time back in June 2013, she was thrilled to get her moment in the spotlight.
“Would I be sitting here now pregnant with my second baby and about to launch my own business with my partner without having made the decision to go on that show?She’s referring to Shoorah, her new on-the-go wellbeing app which focuses on creating bite-sized mental health tools. “So we’ve simplified everything and that is our driving force. We’ve found we make a really good team and I couldn’t do this without him.”
“Ten years is a considerable amount of time and that just feels so crazy,” she says. “So much has happened. There have been times where I’ve thought, ‘if only we could deal with this in private’. And especially now I’m a mother, that can be difficult. She quickly learned that airtime and drama went hand-in-hand and the show’s main players were those at the centre of the scandals.
“It was draining and it wasn’t rewarding because I wasn’t well-liked. Looking back, I was emotionally immature and my mental health was at an all-time low. There were days I didn’t want to get out of bed, I was in such a bad place.Her escape route came in the autumn of 2015 when I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! producers asked her to join the 15th series of the ITV show and Ferne saw a chance to drop the act and turn things round.
She is unable to discuss the situation due to the ongoing police investigation into who is behind the leaks, but spoke on the 10th season of her ITVBe show First Time Mum about her devastation over the loss of her friendship with both Sam and Billie.“When something traumatic happens in your life, especially publicly, of course it changes you,” she says today.
