Ferrari will allow their reserve drivers to take over from Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc after two days of testing in Barcelona. Hamilton's crash on Wednesday has prompted the team to change their plans, giving Giovinazzi and Beganovic a chance to showcase their skills.
Hamilton and Leclerc will relinquish their driving duties after two days at the wheel of a 2023 Ferrari car, paving the way for Ferrari to evaluate reserve driver prospects on Thursday. This plan was pre-determined even before Hamilton's crash on Wednesday disrupted the team's testing schedule. Ferrari secured the Spanish Grand Prix circuit for three days this week to facilitate Hamilton's preparations for the 2025 F1 season alongside his new teammate, Leclerc.
However, initial reports indicating the duo's participation for all three days appear to be inaccurate, according to AutoRacer. \Hamilton has already gained valuable experience in Ferrari's procedures and established a working relationship with his new race engineer, Riccardo Adami, during a closed-door test categorized as Testing of Previous Cars (TPC). The seven-time world champion drove in the afternoon session on Tuesday and returned to the Ferrari SF-23 challenger on Wednesday morning, although the session was prematurely ended due to a crash. Thursday, however, presents an opportunity for other drivers from Ferrari's pool to accumulate valuable F1 mileage. \Antonio Giovinazzi, a former Sauber driver who has served as Ferrari's reserve driver since 2017, is set for track time alongside Dino Beganovic. Beganovic, a 21-year-old member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, will compete in his first full season in Formula 2 with Hitech in 2025. This day will not only allow Beganovic to familiarize himself with F1 machinery but also enable him to complete the necessary mileage to qualify for a Super Licence. Oliver Bearman fulfilled this role in 2024, substituting for Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia. However, with Bearman securing a full-time seat with Haas for the upcoming campaign, Ferrari requires alternative options. While Giovinazzi has always been a potential fallback for Ferrari, Beganovic could emerge as a strong contender for the Scuderia. Beganovic is also likely to participate in some FP1 sessions throughout the year to fulfill Ferrari's mandatory young driver quota. Meanwhile, Hamilton and Leclerc will have further track time at Barcelona during a Pirelli 2026 tyre test alongside McLaren on Tuesday and Wednesday (4-5 February)
