Researchers are seeing a decline in bird populations around Lough Neagh, particularly sedge warblers. This observation raises concerns about the health of the Lough's wildlife.

Ciara Laverty, part of a team monitoring bird numbers around Lough Neagh , has observed changes this year. Research ers use 18-meter-long, fine-mist nets to capture birds at Killycolpy on the County Tyrone shores of Lough Neagh . These Constant Effort Sites (CES) allow for consistent studies across time, recording details like weight, age, and sex before releasing the birds with lightweight metal rings for tracking.

After two years at Killycolpy, Laverty and her team have noticed a decrease in sedge warblers compared to last year. This trend is also observed at other similar sites. Peter Kearns expresses concern about the decline in bird song and eagerly awaits further data to understand the scope of this change
