Ready to open door to members unhappy with 'radical shift' says leader and FM © ANSA
- ROME, SEP 10 - Late business tycoon turned politician Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia party will welcome moderate members of the Democratic Party who decide to leave the centre-left party because it is allegedly becoming too radical under new leader Elly Schlein, FI leader Antonio Tajani, the deputy premier and foreign minister, said Sunday.
The PD is currently racked by internal debate after over 30 Ligurian members quit citing Schlein's leftwing turn on issues including gay rights and a minimum wage, leading one of the many internal minority faction leaders, Emilia-Romagna Governor Stefano Bonaccini, to call for a return to the PD's"majority vocation" and prompting Schlein to say the Ligurians left "probably because they made a mistake to join in the first place".
Tajani told an FI youth rally in Gaeta Sunday that Caterina Chinnici, a PD MEP who recently quit to join FI,"is the emblem of that moderate Catholic soul that does not recognise itself in that political line. "We are looking at that electorate, and today we are ready to open our doors to those who want to participate in the construction of this, which is the home of those who want to create, in the words of Battiato, 'a permanent centre of gravity'."We want to be strong, not violent, one must not confuse a constructive, reliable, serious attitude with weakness".
FI is the smallest part of Italy's ruling coalition which is led by Premier Giorgia Meloni's rightwing Brothers of Italy party and also features Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini's rightwing League party. .
