City car was one of the nation’s cheapest models at less than £15,000; will be replaced by small SUV
The Fiat Panda has been pulled from sale in the UK after 21 years, Autocar can reveal. It had been one of the UK’s cheapest new cars as one of a handful of models available for less than £15,000. It will be replaced by the Grande Panda, a new small SUV twinned with the Citroën C3. It will offer a choice of mild-hybrid and electric powertrains, with the latter UK’s cheapest zero-emission options when it arrives in December, at less than £22,000.
This effectively requires that car firms sell an increasing ratio of electric cars in the UK annually, starting with 22% this year and rising to 80% in 2030. Fiat’s ratio currently stands at around 10%. It recently cut the price of the 500e from £28,195 to £24,995 – or £21,995, including the brand’s ‘e-grant’ discount – to stimulate sales. In Europe, however, the current Panda will remain available until the end of the decade, owing to its continued strong sales.
