Jon Maravilla clarifies he was not on the American Airlines flight that crashed after colliding with a helicopter. He explains he was supposed to be on a Delta flight but was prevented from boarding because his dog was too large.
A young American figure skater, Jon Maravilla , set the record straight regarding rumors that he was saved from the ill-fated American Airlines flight that collided with an Army helicopter. Maravilla clarified that he was scheduled to board a Delta Airlines flight to Atlanta, not the tragic flight to Washington DC that involved several other skaters. Maravilla's initial story had been misconstrued, leading to reports that he was on the doomed American Airlines Flight 5342 .
However, he confirmed that he was not on that flight, which crashed into the Potomac River after colliding with a Black Hawk helicopter shortly before 9pm ET Wednesday. Maravilla had been prevented from boarding his Delta Airlines flight due to his dog being too large. Opting for a road trip instead, he shared his frustration on Instagram, writing: 'Not allowed past gate to board flight. Get me tf out of Kansas please.' Later, he posted from the road: '14-hour journey begins.'The figure skater expressed disbelief over the events, stating, 'I was just with them watching them have lots of fun and just enjoying their time.' Maravilla had been in Wichita for the US Figure Skating Championships, which concluded last week at the city's Intrust Bank Arena. The US Figure Skating organization confirmed that 'several members of our skating community' were on board Flight 5342, including athletes, coaches, and family members returning from the National Development Camp. They added, 'We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims' families closely in our hearts. We will continue to monitor the situation and will release more information as it becomes available.' Among the figure skaters on board was the married Russian pair, Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, world champions in 1994. All 60 passengers and four crew members on the flight, along with three people on the helicopter, are presumed dead.
