Who says that only men are capable of climbing up tall posts to set up or fix our electrical power lines? For over a decade now, women have been serving as linewomen in Meralco since the company first opened the position to them in 2013.Among the first linewomen, not only in the Philippines but in all of Asia, was Karen Cañizares, who was recently promoted as a quality inspector."Kami po 'yung nag re-restore ng power na nawawalan katulad 'pag may mga bagyo.
When she started training, however, she realized that gender does not matter as long as you are determined to do it."Nakita ko naman na pwede kahit sino, ako nga eh," she said.During their training, Cañizares and Castro were taught how to hold a live wire and they must also be able to climb a 90-foot pole, which is almost just as high as a seven-story building. They said that gender is not a barrier when it comes to their chosen field.
