(UPDATE) THE Philippines lost to Switzerland, 2-0, in its historic debut in the FIFA Women's World Cup at the Forsyth Barr Stadium in New Zealand on Friday.
The game started on what looked like a bright note for the Filipinas when Katrina Guillou scored a goal in the 19th minute. But Togo referee Vincentia Abedome ruled an offside and nullified the goal, to the dismay of the small but lively Filipino gallery.World No. 20 Switzerland would prove to be a juggernaut the rest of the way, seizing more ball possessions and putting immense pressure on World No. 46 Philippines with relentless attacks.
Despite the loss, Stajcic said he was proud of how the Filipinas played their first game on the grand football stage, showing 'courage and competitiveness throughout against our rivals, who had several players playing for professional clubs.'The Filipinas will next face host New Zealand on July 25 before wrapping up their group phase action against Norway on July 30.
