Peter Tobin, 76, was caged at HMP Edinburgh for the murder of three women including Polish student Angelika Kluk, 23, whose body was hidden under St Patrick's Church.

A fatal accident inquiry has revealed the final days of serial killer Peter Tobin who died while serving three life sentences for the murders of young women who vanished between 1991 and 2006.

We previously reported how Tobin had been suspected of having prostate cancer when he died at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on October 8, in 2022. A previous FAI explained how the condition had gone undiagnosed for years as Tobin refused medical tests. What happened before Tobin was hospitalised: Around 7pm on September 8, 2022, his cell was opened by a prison officer to allow him to leave his cell and collect his medication. He had taken several steps out of his cell and did not have his walking stick, and was reminded by a prison officer. Tobin returned to his cell to collect his walking stick and suffered a fall, landing on the floor to his side.

During his time as an inpatient within the ERI, he was diagnosed with a number of conditions including prostate cancer. He was then placed into palliative care and 'efforts were made to make his condition comfortable'. Tobin's death was 'expected' by medics The FAI heard that "medical staff had expected his death given a decline after his injury and surgery, combined with his general frailty". Sheriff Matthew Auchincloss found no precautions could have been taken which might have resulted in Tobin's death being avoided.
