The 75-year-old pilot and his co-pilot were seriously injured after the light aircraft collided with a tree and struck the ground vertically a mile-and-a-half from Prestwick Airport.

The final moments of a flight to Glasgow's Prestwick Airport that left two people seriously injured have been revealed.

They planned to fly for around one hour and conduct some general handling exercises to the south of the airport. The exercises were completed without incident, and the plane landed and then took off again, circling before coming in for its final landing. The CFI told investigators the airfield "was moving up the windscreen” and that he realised the runway would be out of gliding distance. He "saw a patch of open ground to the left," and opted not to make a mayday call, instead focusing on the forced landing in the field.

The plane bounced and fell backwards, with the tail becoming entangled in a barbed-wire fence. The lack of propeller slash marks on the ground indicate that the engine had cut out before the crash. In the chaos, the 75-year-old pilot had believed he still had control of the aircraft right up until the crash at 3.03pm. Back at Prestwick Airport, the air traffic controller made several calls to the flight, but with no response.
