A few years ago, Joe Pride was sick of trying to identify his horses in races. Among the bays and blacks and chestnuts which all blend into each other after a while, Pride thought he would make a subtle change: his horses would now wear red bridles.
Sydney’s gargantuan trainer, Chris Waller, had long adopted the white bridles Pride was also using. If he wanted to step out of the Waller shadow which sprawls across Sydney racing, the least he could do was make them look a little different.On Saturday, an unfashionable “ugly duckling” wearing a red bridle surged to victory in the $20 million The Everest at Royal Randwick, the richest horse race ever run in Australia.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing in horse racing, but The Everest result made perfect sense: a horse which won 10 of his 11 races before Saturday, hadn’t had one rival past him in his career, from a perfect barrier, and prepared by a trainer who knew his time was coming in front of a record crowd of 46,498.
Think About It cost just $70,000 for Jamie Walter’s Proven Thoroughbreds. When Peter V’landys said The Everest wasn’t just for the wealthy, he was right. More than a dozen owners wearing the public syndication company’s lime green and black colours crammed the presentation stage, the lucky ones to have bought into a good horse which was good enough to be wanted by a rich slot-holder. They walked away splitting the $7 million first prize.
