A Greens candidate in the Brisbane lord mayoral race is proposing to increase rates on vacant investment properties by a staggering 2,000 per cent in a bid to ease the housing crisis.

Jonathan Sriranganathan revealed his party's campaign initiative on Friday which would see landlords of empty investment sites slapped with a"vacancy levy".

In the detailed campaign proposal, the Greens said investment properties should not be sitting vacant"while people are sleeping on the street" amid the housing and rental crisis. Today the Greens are announcing a major BCC campaign initiative - a vacancy levy to put downward pressure on rents and house prices. Investors who leave homes, shops or blocks of land empty for more than 6 months, without good reason, would cop heavy fees.

Citing data from the Brisbane City Council, the Greens said there was more than 2,300 hectares of what is described as privately-owned"vacant urban land" in Brisbane.
