Shaw Vineyard's founder took his inspiration from wine industry pioneers such as Dr. Konstantin Frank and Herman Wiemer and over time applied his own practices to how he grows his grapes and makes his wines.
Steve Shaw Jr. and his father Steve stand in the tasting room at their namesake winery in the Finger Lakes.It’s a 12-minute ride heading southeast from Penn Yan and around a 20-minute drive along the west side of Seneca Lake from Watkins Glen.
Shaw said in an email that his winery is an artisanal establishment with a focus on viticulture and winemaking. “We are not trying to sell wine glasses and keychains,” he says. “We offer a unique tasting experience that most regional wineries would call a library tasting and they charge extra for the experience and for the qualifying wines.
Those “unusual things” include, according to his website, letting his wines age as long as five years or more before bottling, allowing the grapes to hang for an extended period and hand-picking all the grapes he sources.
