Fire has broken out at Broadmoor Hospital, the psychiatric facility that has housed some of the UK's most notorious criminals. Flames and smoke have been seen coming from the building in Berkshire.
The high-security hospital has been home to prisoners including Ronnie Kray, Charles Bronson and the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe. A Thames Valley Police spokesperson confirmed fire had broken out and they had been asked to attend. Broadmoor Hospital, often referred to as Broadmoor Prison, is a high-security psychiatric hospital in Crowthorne. It is one of the three high-security psychiatric hospitals in the UK, alongside Ashworth Hospital and Rampton Secure Hospital. Established in 1863, Broadmoor was originally designed to house mentally ill men who had committed crimes or were considered dangerous to themselves or others.
The hospital accommodates individuals who have committed serious offenses, such as murder or assault, but who are deemed not criminally responsible for their actions due to mental health conditions. These patients are typically referred to as having "not guilty by reason of insanity" status.
