People are being advised to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed as firefighters tackle the blaze in a warehouse.
Plumes of smoke can be seen from both sides of the Tyne rising from the Port of Tyne, which has confirmed there are no reported injuries.
"Our first crew was on scene within two minutes of receiving the call, with six fire appliances and two aerial ladder platforms currently in attendance at the commercial premises."The fire service is advising members of the public to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed.
