A worker in Surry Hills told Sky News Australia he was collecting his $10 pizza deal on Thursday afternoon when he witnessed three teenagers running from a building engulfed in flames.
Arson detectives are at the scene in the city's CBD on Friday morning, which is standard practice for a fire of this magnitude.
The building was glowing orange and red as 20 trucks of more than 100 Fire Rescue New South Wales firefighters from multiple stations tried to tackle the flames.Firefighters are concerned the building could collapse. Picture: John GraingerResidents in at least one nearby apartment block on Thursday had to be evacuated onto the street due to concerns of falling debris and the intense heat.
"Our intent is to get this community back to its functionality prior to the incident but we’ve still got a significant collapse risk," he said.
