Firecracker-related injuries have significantly increased in the Philippines ahead of the New Year, prompting health officials to urge the public to avoid using fireworks.

Nearly 150 individuals have been injured by firecrackers and fireworks with still two days before the New Year celebrations. Data from the Department of Health (DOH) showed that there are now 142 firecracker-related injuries recorded between December 22 and December 29 (6 a.m.). This is 35 percent higher compared to the same period last year, which saw 105 injured revelers. In the last 24 hours, the DOH recorded 17 new victims of firecrackers.

Of the firecracker injuries, there were 104 caused by illegal firecrackers, such as boga, 5-star, and piccolo. DOH also noted that 85 of the victims are considered as active users of firecrackers. It also noted that 115 of the victims are aged 19 years old and below, while 27 of the cases involved 20 years old and above. The health department also reported that 127 of the victims are male, while 15 are female. The DOH has repeatedly discouraged the public from using firecrackers and fireworks. 'Don't use firecrackers as it is dangerous, especially for minors and children. They explode and may cause damage to one's body,' said the DOH.
