'This attack was senseless, and we are calling on the community to support us by not attacking our firefighters'

A firefighter was injured and crews attacked as they responded to reports of an electric box fire in West Belfast on Monday.

Last night, at 8.15pm firefighters were called to the incident on the Suffolk Road, Belfast, with two fire appliances from Springfield Fire Station attending. On arrival, crews were attacked by youths with stones, resulting in one of the team receiving a cut to the nose. Two windows in a fire appliance were broken and the crew was forced to withdraw from the incident "for safety reasons" at 8.26pm.In a statement issued by a NIFRS spokesperson, they said: "Our firefighters are here to keep the community safe. This attack was senseless, and we are calling on the community to support us by not attacking our firefighters.

"We are aware that this sort of behaviour comes from a small minority of people. People deserve to feel safe in their communities and we will continue working closely with community groups, statutory agencies and elected representatives to try and prevent attacks like this from happening again."For all the latest news, visit the Belfast Live homepage here.
