Firefighters on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria have been forced into temporary retreat as wildfires consume a nature reserve and spread towards population centres.

“Human beings are not capable of stopping a fire as intense as this one,” said Federico Grillo, emergency services chief on the island.Speaking at a press conference late on Sunday night, Mr Grillo said that firefighters assisted by water bombing planes and helicopters were unable to prevent the flames rampaging through the woodlands of the Tamadaba natural park, while adding that at least two villages had already been engulfed.
