Firefighters in Exeter, Devon successfully rescued a litter of puppies and their mother from a flat fire. The fire, which started in the kitchen, caused significant damage to the kitchen but only resulted in smoke damage to the rest of the flat. Two men in the flat at the time of the fire were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Crews in two fire engines from Danes Castle and Middlemoor had entered the flat with breathing apparatus. The kitchen was badly damaged by the fire, but the rest of the flat only suffered smoke damage after the alert at 13:52 GMT on Wednesday. Two men, who were in the flat at the time of the fire, were treated for minor smoke inhalation by paramedics.
