He wanted to thank the crews who made every effort to save his elderly parents as a fatal fire ripped through their Bangor home
The Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service is to be awarded the Freedom of the Borough of Ards and North Down after a request by local MP Alex Easton to have them recognised.
Mr Easton said: "The fire service did everything in their power that day to save Mum and Dad but sadly it wasn't to be. Almost 21 months on, myself and my family are still coming to terms with our loss and knowing that everything that could be done foe them, was done, is some comfort. "So on Saturday, they will be conferred with the highest honour the council has in its gift. The crews deserve every thanks and appreciation and I hope this goes some way to help them understand how important they are to us."
It is only the fourth time the Freedom of the Borough has been awarded since Ards and North Down Borough Council was established in 2015, and only the 37th occasion since the first conferral in the area, 94 years ago in 1930. "We owe a great debt of gratitude to all those who serve and we hope this accolade goes some way to recognising the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of Firefighters both locally and across Northern Ireland.”
The afternoon display and activities are part of a public event allowing local Firefighters to engage with local people in a fun and relaxed environment. There will be specialist equipment on display and live demonstration of firefighting skills. There will also be some opportunities for visitors to try firefighting activities for themselves.
