Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service are appealing for help in tracking down the family and friends of firefighters who fought a huge blaze during the Second World War . Six voluntary Nottinghamshire firefighters were mobilised to help during the Manchester Blitz , also known as the Christmas Blitz, in December 1940.
Three of the six, who were all based at Kirkby-in-Ashfield fire station, died as a result, while the remaining three were seriously injured. Among them was Ralph Burrows, a bus driver who left his wife and two young children to go to Manchester. He died at the scene in Piccadilly. Joseph Henry Wright, a painter and decorator by trade, suffered the same fate. Alan Richard Day was also a painter and decorator and died of his wounds in Robey Street Infirmary.
Ronald Lowe and William Makinson were both seriously injured and treated at Manchester Royal Infirmary, while George Best was transported to Mansfield General Hospital for his treatment. The heavy Nazi bombing campaign of Manchester, also known as the Christmas Blitz, started in August 1940 and lasted almost two years.
To mark remembrance day later this year, Ashfield Fire Station is hosting a memorial event which will remember all the six Nottinghamshire firefighters. "Please share not just around Nottinghamshire but the UK and the world. These family members could be anywhere," the station wrote on its Facebook page.Anyone who knows any of the men have been urged to get in touch by emailing [email protected].
