The mayor has since invited unions to another meeting with transport bosses

More than a hundred TfGM staff members staged a rally in Manchester city centre this afternoon on their first day of planned strike action.

It then ended in a rally outside the Tootal Buildings at the top of Oxford Road, where GMCA is headquartered. Blowing whistles, bearing placards and chanting, the rally was met with honks of support from passing vehicles, including Bee Network buses. Earners of between £27,800 and £51,000 would see rises of between 6.8% and 3.1%, while anyone earning more than that would receive 2.5%.

In his statement Burnham said he was willing to meet with union bosses again “to move this situation forward”, on the condition that the employer’s latest offer was the “starting point”. “There is grave concern over parental pay policies,” Unison secretary Tony Wilson told the M.E.N. “There’s members who have said, if they wanted to start a family, they would have to move to another employer.”

She said staff had worked “really hard” on the rollout of the Bee Network, which is due to take a further step forward in the New Year, when remaining bus services in south Manchester will be absorbed into the network at last. “The work that you do lets me get to work and see my family every day,” one union member told the rally. “Without the tram or the bus, there won’t be people staying in hotels or going to events…the whole economy will grind to a halt.”
