Businesses breathe a sigh of relief as the southern platforms at the new train station open, but there is still a long way to go to turn the inner-city Perth suburb into a major transport and housing hub.
Half of the new Bayswater Train Station opened to the public yesterday, as the WA transport minister apologised for months of disruptions to local businesses and residents.But work is continuing on the link to the Morley-Ellenbrook lineThe opening of the southern platforms saw commuters travel on the Midland and Airport lines for the first time in months.
"When you're transforming a station like this, in such a confined area, it's very hard to minimise the impact but this is part of the transformation of rail stations.More support needed for businesses "But I think the real work starts now, I think this is where we need to see a continuation of effort and energy and planning to take it from what is ground zero, and really make it a beautiful functioning town centre."Mr Princi described yesterday's partial opening as a "landmark day" and said it had brought a "real sense of relief."
"We're very keen to work with the council to support new housing and create this not only as a major transport hub, but a major housing hub, creating diversity of housing supply," she said.Train enthusiast Mark Steffens woke up at 3:45am yesterday morning to catch the first train from Midland to Bayswater station.
