Rick Slayman received the kidney at Massachusetts General in March after he had been diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease last year.
The hospital emphasised there is no indication his death was a result of the transplant.
"Mr Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation," Massachusetts General said in a statement. Slayman had been a patient in the hospital's transplant program for 11 years, he previously said in a statement. He received a kidney from a human donor in 2018, after living with diabetes and high blood pressure for many years."I saw it not only as a way to help me, but a way to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive," Slayman wrote in the statement.
The need for organs far exceeds the number available in the US. According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network, there are more than 100,000 people currently waiting for an organ donation.
