Take a look at the new location for MIF 2023s Festival Square
Even the rain couldn't stop punters from stopping by the colourful new hub of Manchester International Festival this afternoon as the biennial event got underway.
They're joined by Zouk Tea Bar & Grill offering an extensive selection of dishes - from Kaati Rolls with fillings including chargrilled chicken tikka and scrambled paneer, to snack boxes spanning samosas, rice and salad. They also have a range of curries and sides like gunpowder chips . The soundtrack for Festival Square will be delivered by a range of artists and presenters over the course of the festival, with over 190 bands, DJs and musicians lined up over the next few weeks. Over 150 performers are from Greater Manchester, including post-punk band A Certain Ratio, Dutch Uncles, OneDa, The Red Stains, Agbeko, Werkha and The KTNA.
Following an open call-out earlier this year, in which over 290 artists and community groups from the region applied, 26 acts were also selected to perform on the Festival Square stage - from alt-pop singer-songwriter Nxdia, Afrobeat and Reggae collective Sens Sagna and the Kajamor Family, and Brazilian percussion from youth-group Jubacana.
