“I think it’s a shame these girls miss out on sport because of periods,” says Houghton. As for many other athletes, it was school that provided Houghton with an opportunity to get heavily involved in sporting activities. “I first developed my love for football when I was in primary school. Back when I was that young it wasn’t really that common for girls to play football, so my only option was to play with the lads in the school fields and try and get on their team – which I managed to do.
The thing is, Houghton is better than “quite good” in every way. Over the past eight years, the women’s team has worked to grow their platform. Maybe that’s why their sport's TV audience – both male and female – reached an historic peak this summer. The Women’s World Cup final on July 7, attracted an audience of 4.7 million people – more than a third of the total audience watching TV at the time
. “I’ve noticed a difference in terms of participation,” says Houghton. “Most schools have a girl’s football team, and now there’s a lot more young girls coming to watch football games. I think [it's down to] the fact that we did well in the World Cup and it was broadcast live on TV – every single game, not just England games. It has let young girls aspire to be professional footballers, so, I think it’s a lot more accessible.
