The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is one of a few video game movies that prove the “curse” is broken and now theThe trailer introduces famed Sonic rival Shadow as the new antagonist, uniting “Team Sonic,” now Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and possibly James Marsden. Also, surprisingly, Jim Carey’s Doctor Robotnik, fulfilling the old trope of the enemy of my enemy is unfortunately my friend.
The draw here is the addition of Keanu Reeves as Shadow, so fast he’s essentially teleporting like Nightcrawler and stronger than Team Sonic combined. Easily. Reeves only gets a few lines in the trailer, but it’s enough to convince you that yes, he was the right person for the part. Sonic the Hedgehog has been a hit at the box office. Nothing insane like the $1B+ of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, but the first film did $319 million worldwide and the second did $405 million. If the trend continues, we could be looking at a half a billion dollar Sonic film for the third installment here.“Shadow was created by Takashi Iizuka and Shiro Maekawa and first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 .
So, this trailer does seem to be going along with the game lore. We see Gerald Robotnik in the trailer reuniting with his grandson. We see a girl with Shadow in containment who is likely Maria Robotnik. Will they actually kill her off in a PG movie? We’ll see, if they do, no doubt that will be a very light touch. In the game Shadow actually ends up using guns and vehicles and suffice to say Sonic does…not do that.
This will be a hit. Between the OG three and now Reeves showing up as Shadow, this is going to do very well.
