Real-live heroes
Hero Lancashire police officers who risked their lives to try and save a woman who attempted to take their own life have won a National Police Bravery award.
They helped move the woman across to the other side of the river where it was much shallower, and lay the woman above the water so they could start CPR, as she was unresponsive and not breathing. PCs Katherine Maxwell and Mike McMahon arrived shortly afterwards, bringing extensive first aid equipment over the wall and into the river.
A multi-agency plan was established for getting the woman out of the river in the safest manner, considering the 10ft wall either side. The fire service lowered its aerial platform into the river, and the woman was transferred to a stretcher and placed onto the platform. Chief Constable Chris Rowley said: "I am hugely proud of our officers who have deservedly been recognised by winning this award. The actions of these officers epitomise everything that is great about our police officers.
