Aiden Aslin, who was sentenced to death after being captured by Russian-backed forces in eastern Ukraine is among those who have been released in a prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia.

A still image, taken from footage of the Supreme Court of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, shows British citizen Aiden Aslin captured by Russian forces during a military conflict in Ukraine, in a courtroom cage at a location given as Donetsk, Ukraine, in June. UK Health Minister Aiden Aslin was confirmed to be released on Wednesday. Five British nationals captured by Russian-backed forces in Ukraine have been released as part of a prisoner swap, the Prime Minister has confirmed.

She thanked the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, “for his efforts to secure the release of detainees, and Saudi Arabia for their assistance”. “The relevant Saudi authorities received and transferred them from Russia to the kingdom and are facilitating procedures for their respective countries,” the statement said.

Mr Aslin, 28, who has a Ukrainian passport, was captured along with fellow Briton Shaun Pinner in April while fighting with the Ukrainian Marines.
