California has been hit by eleven thousand lightning strikes in three days
Five people have died and hundreds have lost their homes in wildfires ripping through California over the last few days
Tens of thousands of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, while firefighters are pushed to the brink to try and control the blazes amid a scorching heatwave. Local counties and the Red Cross have set up temporary shelters, but are grappling with trying to accommodate as many as possible while keeping to social distancing.A pilot, who was on a water-dropping mission, was among those confirmed dead after his aircraft crashed on Wednesday. He was the only person onboard.
The fires have so destroyed 175 buildings, including residents’ homes, and are threatening 50,000 more, said Cal Fire assistant deputy director Daniel Berlant. Governor Gavin Newsom said the fires were clear evidence of climate change, in a last-minute video recorded for the Democratic National Convention from a forest after visiting an evacuation centre.
