The appointment of Josh Murray has been an unnecessary distraction for a five-month-old government.
If ever any proof was required that the new NSW Labor government is green, the appointment of Transport Secretary Josh Murray is the perfect proof. Inexperience has been on full display.
Haylen, a respected member of the party’s left faction, cut her political teeth in Canberra in the offices of Julia Gillard and Anthony Albanese. She was the youngest female mayor of Marrickville. However, instead of Haylen owning her own decision and riding out any short-term pain that the opposition inflicted on her, Haylen tried – clumsily – to have the best of both worlds. She wanted her pick for the job as well as a merit-based process at a cost to taxpayers.Only months ago, Labor watched on as the then Coalition government spectacularly failed to deal with the John Barilaro trade appointment.
The result? Weeks of negative stories, an awkward parliamentary inquiry in which Murray felt it necessary to read out the results of his psychometric testing and details emerging that Premier Chris Minns had been mates with the new transport boss for 20 years.NSW Labor is very out of practice when it comes to governing. It was not only out of power for 12 long years, but had at least four before that of not doing good government.
