Every UK phone will receive the same alert at 3pm on Sunday, April 23

It was announced last month that in order to trial a new emergency notification system, all UK mobile phones would receive a practice alert that mimics the real thing at 3pm on Sunday, April 23. The new test aims to alert people of dangers such as flooding, fires or extreme weather, and will provide information on how to keep yourself and your family safe.

There's also been a great deal of false information spread about the alert, so to put people's minds at ease, fact-checkers have debunked some myths about what the alert is and what it will do, Wales Online reports. The Cabinet Office says phone calls won’t go to voicemail if you haven’t acknowledged the alert and the alert won’t stop a phone call in progress. Other notifications will also still come through to your phone. However, in order to answer a call or view notifications, you will need to acknowledge the alert. The Cabinet Office has confirmed that alerts will not collect personal data. The alerts will also not enable the government to know if phones are active or where they are.

The NHS Covid-19 app also didn't share personal information, such as someone’s name and address, with local authorities - it shared the time and date an infected person visited a venue.Full Fact identified claims online suggesting that phone network providers have breached GDPR by allowing the emergency alert to take place. GDPR legislation dictates how personal data is used by organisations, businesses and the government.
