An animal sanctuary has issued an urgent plea for help after five new-born puppies were reportedly found dumped in a skip near Aldi. The pups were found with their umbilical cords still attached on Laird Street, Birkenhead and were believed to be just "hours old".
"If someone has gone to the lengths of putting these pups in a bag in a skip, it sets alarm bells off for any other animals in their care. We would be happy to even get mum vet-checked and come to some sort of arrangement with the owner if they aren't happy to hand her over to be with the pups. We could look at other ways to ensure that their welfare needs are being met."
Like many others animal sanctuaries, the rescue is out of its depth with the increasing demand for care of newborn puppies. Steph said: "I've never known as many puppies to need our help. According to animal rights organisation PETA, there are around 20,000 dogs put to sleep each year in the UK. Steph said: "We're losing hundreds and hundreds of dogs every month in this country at the moment.
