Gardening expert Sarah Raven shares her top tips for pruning in August
Pruning is a vital task for garden enthusiasts aiming to maintain a flourishing and attractive outdoor space. The process of pruning includes the targeted removal of specific parts of plants, such as branches, buds, and spent blooms, which is done to shape the plant's growth for both practicality and aesthetic appeal in the garden landscape. As we move from August into December, the focus on pruning shifts towards getting rid of dead or damaged stems.
Sarah said: 'Most long-flowering perennials such as geranium psilostemon and geranium 'Johnson's blue' have finished blooming now, so cut them right to the ground and water to encourage them to put up more blooms as soon as possible and generally prevent the garden from looking frazzled and messy.' Lavender Now's the time to give your hardy lavender plants a good trim following their late August flowering.
