The battle over data is only just beginning, and CEOs need to be especially proactive about protecting this valuable corporate asset in the age of AI.
Data used to be the waste byproduct of running a company. Now, it is the fuel that drives the engine. Thecase is a good example. It produced articles that convinced readers to subscribe and advertisers to pay for ads, assuming that content would have a limited shelf life. Now, that treasure trove of content has a valuable new use: training AI that will create orders of magnitude more value.Your data is shared with partners, customers or everyone via the internet.
In addition, employees using generative AI introduce the risk that they’ll feed company data to LLMs that’ll then serve competitors. Create a policy around AI use by employees. Some companies, like Apple and JP Morgan, haveafter users complained that their content was training AI models. Tech companies often update terms of service with little fanfare, so be on the lookout. Push back and demand clarity.
Given that, there’s little benefit in not taking a privacy-first approach. Open-source models are now some of the strongest available, and every major infrastructure vendor offers private AI deployment tools, eliminating the need to tie yourself exclusively to services that require data sharing.
