One candidate says he would abolish the role of East Midlands Mayor but still take the salary it pays in the meantime

Candidates to be the first East Midlands Mayor have been setting out more details on what they would do if elected to the important role. Voters in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire will head to the polls on May 2 to decide who should lead the new East Midlands Combined County Authority - which is being given billions of pounds to make decisions currently made in Westminster.

Key to Mr Adlington-Stringer's time as mayor would be the use of citizens' assemblies. The Green candidate says these assemblies would be crucial in advising him on policy and would contain "people who know what it's like to live on the breadline." On the issue of roads, Mr Bradley says that kickstarting a huge programme of road resurfacing would be one of his first spending priorities if elected. He said he would only invest in "proper resurfacing, not repairs - proper long-term jobs."

Alan Graves Alan Graves does not believe in the role of East Midlands Mayor and would scrap it within two years, employing a legal team if he won the election to help him undo the Government legislation creating the role. Asked how feasible this outcome was, Mr Graves said: "You imagine if I become the mayor, that's a powerful message to send to the Government. All would do is make me more popular.

Reform UK's candidate confirmed that if he was successful in abolishing the combined authority, all the money allocated for the region would go back to the Government. The independent candidate says he would want to ensure that he had "got that young voice coming in" to the combined authority. To that end, he has pledged that student unions will sit on the panels advising the authority.

"High streets are struggling. The mayor should not be prescribing a one size fits all approach to each town but should work collaboratively with local areas to find the solutions. Every village, town, and city is different, and where better transport and housing will help, local authorities are best placed to come up with city and town centre strategies.
