From Alan Turing to Deep Blue, AI has a long history – and an even longer future
Not only have computers become much more powerful, but so has the way we code AI systems and the way they work We are living through a technological revolution. Over the past 18 months, generative Artificial Intelligence has emerged as the technology of the moment, with a new story published by the world’s media every 24 seconds in 2024, according to my analysis of Nexis, a media database.
In an academic paper outlining the test, he made two bold claims: that computers would eventually have about 100 megabytes of memory, and that this would help machines pass the test. The technology was a boon for the US, which was locked in a Cold War stand-off with the Soviet Union. In its breathless report the following day, thequoted Georgetown researcher Léon Dostert as saying: “Five, perhaps three, years hence, interlingual meaning conversion by electronic process in important functional areas of several languages may well be an accomplished fact.”
The perceptron never worked. But the principles behind it would become popular decades later, as computer hardware caught up to make it possible. Those early failures prompted a series of government reports in the UK and US that questioned whether AI development was worth the amount of money being poured into developing it.
